I have been gathering material for use in my little Dojo Of Anti Dumbness (the home school for my 4 year old and eventualy the youngest) and came across something I should have known about years ago and thanks to the glory of the googlesphere now am in full possession of (burnt on dvds complete with websites and text of related material for each episode...)

"DRM - what is it good for absolutley nothing...say it again"

In the last few days I have read all manner of pro and con DRM issues spurred on, in large part, by the utterances of one Steve Jobs. Jobs has built a little empire on selling devices that tie into a DRM locked content delivery system and has now said that he would be willing to tear down his DRM Curtain if the content management companies would let him.

As Andy Armstrong put so well "He’s an opportunistic hypocrite. DRM allowed Apple to create the iPod monopoly. Just a few months ago he was vocally pro-DRM. So what? The fact that he’s one of the most prominent rats leaving the sinking DRM ship doesn’t disguise the fact that it’s sinking."

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the companies Jobs is looking to for the green light on being a good boy are still spending millions to develop and deploy DRM content. They are also very much working the legal system to make it a crime to not purchase their content at the price they set.

On the other side of this are the truly brave and forward looking efforts have been moving along to make DRM Free content available as well as to break the DRM with 2$ sharpies a day after the DRM Curtain companies unveil their million dollar schemes.

To paraphrase the Gipper ...If you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the artists and the consumers of their content.. Come here, to this gate. Mr. Job, open this gate. Mr. Jobs, tear down this DRM. Eleswise, your just anotha victim..see.

From the amazing Greylodge you can find this gem of viewing..."As the centrepiece of BBC Four’s Science Fiction Britannia season, this three-part documentary explores how UK writers pioneered and remained in the vanguard of one of the world’s most popular literary genres." Ill take a ticket for that one:)- "After a break of 16 centuries, Greek pagans are worshipping the ancient gods again - despite furious opposition from the Orthodox church. Get Ready For....Vietraq II

because, ya know, Mission Accomplished on part the first and all that......yeeeesh "January 23, 2007 Today, the American Foreign Policy Council (AFPC) begins a week-long advertising campaign aimed at educating the American public about the growing threat posed by a nuclear Iran. The ad campaign consists of two 30-second spots that began running Tuesday on CNN, MSNBC, Headline News and the Fox News Channel in Washington, DC, Maryland and northern Virginia. " and then add this WP piece "The Bush administration has authorized the U.S. military to kill or capture Iranian operatives inside Iraq as part of an aggressive new strategy to weaken Tehran's influence across the Middle East and compel it to give up its nuclear program, according to government and counterterrorism officials with direct knowledge of the effort."

Cardiac Paper Computer Take One

I printed out the PDFs for making a CARDIAC and crafted this of plain paper and tape..man this needs much better makings. The next version will probably be coated/laminated so you can write on it with a dry erase and then wipe when you are done with that run.

If you are wondering what this is....

"I had one of the real deal CARDIAC's back in 7th grade(1977ish) , I was already hooked on the bit tip but this thing showed me some of the ways and means of the root issues. I found mention of it a few years back on boing^2 but lost the scent. The desire to teach my little ones that computers are not all about bloat and legaly constrained guis made me go and find the makings. What I lack now is the orginal manual that came with it, there is a meatspace source for it that I am tracking down.

This was a paper trialto see if it worked, it does. Paper thoug is teh flimzy so I am goingto make the next one out of sturdier stuff, maybe cardboard with the text laminated on...I dont know yet. Any ideas?

For more info on the CARDIAC go to. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardiac_-_cardboard_illustrative_aid_to_computation "

What A Drag It Is Getting Old

It seems the CWN (community wireless network) group I am part of , that being the Personal Telco Project, is going through another bout of growth/contraction/selfexamination/reinvnetion that happens to groups . After 6 years of hard work and a shifting landscape this comes as no surprise. The thread linked to has some good WhereToNow ideas. Any ideas? Toss em in. Upshot of this, many of us will be at the Recent Changes Camp being hosted in Portland to see if we can do more than just post about things to the list(not that many are not already doing things, we just need more folks, myself included, doing more)

Legalized Torture and The Death of The Rights of The Accused...American Style

Boing Boing: A Directory of Wonderful Things: "The provisions of Bush's new torture law mean that Americans have lost the key, constitutional right on which Anglo-American criminal law (and criminal-law procedures in true democracies in general) is founded; that's the basic right of an individual to know why he or she is being apprehended and detained. Now, technically, as in Stalin's Soviet Union, Hitler's Germany, Mao's China or Pol Pot's Cambodia, anyone labeled an 'enemy combatant' - again, by whom; by Bush? - can be whisked away and never heard from again. That kind of authority, in the hands of corrupt or untruthful politicians, may or may not be an effective tool in some kind of 'war on terror,' but it certainly can be a useful tool when it comes to silencing their opponents."

Bob And Ray

Archive.org has become the central archive for several Old Time Radio groups. Over the lasst few weeks hundreds of shows have been posted up. In the next year or so I figure the bulk of many collectors archives will be up online for anyone to listen to or grab. One newer entry is the amazing collection of about 230 Bob and Ray shows. The humor is dharp, dry and dead on. They skewer the media of their time (radio, tv and the movies) as well as the culture in general. If Matt Neffer, Boy Spot-Welder is not some one you know then warm up your harddrive and grab these shows.

Timeless

"This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires and lights in a box. There is a great and perhaps decisive battle to be fought against ignorance, intolerance and indifference. This weapon of television could be useful." Edward R. Murrow Add the computer to that and you got one great quote for today.

Public Access Hollywood

(found on greylodge) "With this minor complaint aside, Public Access Hollywood is still a fun and interesting look into downtown Hollyweird. From David Hart’s twisted religious puppet show to the Threee Geniuses’ psychotic TV freak out, there’s a lot to discover here for cult film enthusiasts. While there isn’t necessarily an easy way to get the film right now if you don’t live in L.A." Download Torrent

GO

It started a year ago when my youngest son was born. A friend of the family gave me a copy of Shoen Jump to pass the time. For the most part it was swords and skirts; one story though caught my interest. Hikaru No Go is the story of a young kid who comes to have the ghost of a one time Go master live in his head. The ghost guides the kid into playing Go and the kid in turn gets hooked. Which in turn gets me hooked on Go. Sure, I have played Go a few times in my life but this is a more studied affair. You can find me on the IGS servers getting schooled by anyone 22kyu and above.
Aside from learning the games depth , more so than I do now at least, I have got it in my head I need to build a good goban of my own.

The Pinball Hall Of Fame

Jason Scott has posted about his finding of Pinball Mecca. Lets hope some of this shows up on the Arcade documentary he is currently shooting. "The Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas has only come into the world this year. It is the work of a number of people but primarily Tim Arnold, a fervent collector of pinball machines who has been credited with having nearly 1,000 in various states, but with over 400 in good shape. He's had this collection for decades, having been an arcade operator or involved with them about as long as I've been alive. His dream was to have a place loaded with pinball machines, a museum where you could both see these artifacts of the latter half of the 20th century but also be able to play them. And not just play them, play them at the original prices and have a great time. Currently, that dream has come true"
